St Andrews Cathedral
St. Andrew’s Cathedral is the oldest Anglican house of worship and the largest cathedral in Singapore. Located in the heart of the Civic District right next to City Hall MRT station, this national monument stands as a striking oasis of peace amidst a dense urban skyline. Built in 1861 to replace an earlier church that had been twice struck by lightning, its majestic Neo-Gothic design features a towering 63-metre spire, brilliant stained-glass windows, and soaring lancet arches. Its iconic, pristine white exterior walls owe their smooth, marble-like finish to Madras Chunam—a historic plaster mix of shell lime, egg whites, and coarse sugar. Beyond its architectural beauty, the cathedral holds deep historical significance, having served as an emergency casualty hospital during World War II.
